Unusual Cat Breeds

cat-breeds1

There are a number of unusual cat breeds, many of which have resulted from natural mutations. Many cat lovers seek out unusual cats, such those of the following assortment of quirky breeds.

The Scottish Fold

The Scottish Fold is the result of a mutation that occurred in 1961. The first Scottish Fold cat, Susie, was discovered on a farm in Scotland. Intrigued by the unusual cat which had flattened ears and a face like an otter, shepherd William Ross and his wife adopted one of Susie’s kittens.

A few years later, cat breeder and geneticist Pat Turner worked to develop the breed, overseeing a number of pairings to ensure that the genetic mutation became widespread. Because the flattened ear gene is dominant, if either of a kitten’s parents is a Scottish Fold, the kitten will also have folded ears.

Scottish Folds tend to have sweet, good-natured personalities and quiet voices, and usually live about 15 years. They should be bred with straight-eared cats, as breeding two folded-eared cats can cause a degenerative joint disease in the offspring.

The Maine Coon Cat

A wild-looking cat with pointed tufts on its ears and a bushy tail, many falsely believe that this breed is the result of matings between cats and raccoons. In reality, the Maine Coon is likely the offspring of shorthaired local cats and long-haired cats from overseas, such as those brought by the Vikings to North America.

A thick, water-resistant coat and large tufted feet that act as snow shoes make this cat well suited to harsh winter climates. Maine Coons tend to be very large, and continue to grow for the first 3-5 years of life, far longer than most cats. Gentle and usually laid back, they tend to maintain playful, kittenish qualities into adulthood. They don’t meow often, and when they do, it is an unusual chirping trill.

Ukrainian Levkoy

This cat is hairless and has folded ears and a long, very muscular body. Levkoys have big eyes that often appear to be partially closed, as though the cat is tired, and wrinkled skin that is very soft to the touch. The Levkoy is very active and friendly.

The Cornish Rex

Looking like aliens with their slender bodies, pointy faces, wavy fur and enormous bat ears, Cornish Rex cats are enjoyable to pat because their fur feels like silk or velvet. The Cornish Rex sheds less than other cats as well. Cornish Rex cats are extremely affectionate. They love people and tend to be very active and playful.

The Oriental Shorthair

orientalThe Oriental shorthair is affectionate, playful and quick to purr. This breed is highly curious and needs a lot of attention. Oriental Shorthairs, which have enormous ears, slender triangular faces and very long tails, can be found in more than 300 colors and patterns.

The Sphynx Cat

The Sphynx appears to be a hairless cat, although it is not truly hairless. The skin should have the texture of Chamois leather. It may be covered with very soft hair which can only be described as peach fuzz. Because the sphynx cats have no hair to keep them warm they prefer to cuddle up against other animals and people, they even tend to cuddle up and sleep with their owners under the covers. Lack of coat makes the cat quite warm to the touch. Whiskers and eyebrows may be present, either whole or broken, or may be totally absent. Their skin is the color their fur would be, and all the usual cat marking patterns (solid, point, van, tabby, tortie, etc) may be found in Sphynx too.

It may be fluffy but the way to do Persian cat care must also be according to how you do it with other cats. You have to perform the tasks with love and affection, just like being a parent to their child.

Where It Came From
The history of where this breed of cats came from is varied depending on who you are talking to. But most would say that the name has something to do with its origin. It is said that some of the early Persian cats do actually came from Persia. This country is now known as Iran.

These cats are also believed to have originated from Turkey, as well as England in the time of Crusades. This breed held a special spot in the royalties of England and even to the king of Persia during the early days. Such type of people valued the possession of Persian cats.

Maybe that’s the reason why until now, Persian cats seem to walk the walk. They look like they have something classy about them.

The Breed
Persian cats’ body built can range from medium to large. It may appear fluffy like a pillow but actually has a good muscle tone. The fluff or its coat has a fine texture and seems to be full of life. That is what gives the appearance of richness to this breed.

How to Care
Caring for your Persian cats need not be as regal as they seem to be. The idea is to be responsible and do your tasks accordingly.

You have to provide your pet with the best kind of food. They are not humans and their needs are a lot different from you. So do not give them your leftovers. Choose the quality cat food according to your budget. Make sure that you give them the food as fresh as possible. Don’t let your cats touch spoiled food or else it may cause them sickness like diarrhea or upset stomach.

Always maintain their litter boxes. They have a sensitive smell. And they don’t like anything that stinks. This will also do your house good because you will be able to keep things tidy.

And of course, know your pet. You have to observe them well. You need to know when something’s not right. Have the veterinarian check them annually and whenever needed.

Just like a child, there are vaccinations that your cat needs to have. You have to include that on your monthly budget. So you better check your vet for some advice on how much you have to allot for each month’s check up, if there would be any.

And, of course, you have to take time to really care for your pets. Take time to play with them. They need to feel that you love them. Spend quality time with your cats. If you will be having other pets at home, take time and strategize on including the new one to the whole system.

Your cats tend to get jealous when they don’t get the attention that they used to have. It may lead to stress and depression. If you don’t take notice, this may get worse. So you always have to be very cautious.

Get in the groove of your Persian cat care. And you will be surprised that through time, you will be able to develop ways to identify the signs and act on them before it becomes too late.

Adopting or buying a pet cat is certainly an exciting time, however to ensure that you and your pet are happy together you need to consider what type of cat suits your likes, home, budget and family.

Whilst choosing the individual cat you take home with you will ultimately be an emotional decision, you can easily narrow down your choices by addressing a few key areas of cat ownership.

These include:
Long or short hair cat?
Indoor or outdoor?
One or more cats?
Buy or Adopt?

Coat Type
Choosing between a long or short haired cat comes down to aesthetics (looks) as well as whether or not you have allergies or are planning to keep the cat inside where an abundance of hair may bother you. Most long haired breeds like Persians require personal grooming, whilst a semi-longhair or shorthair breed will not require much or any grooming by the owner. Keep this in mind when choosing a cat!

Indoors vs Outdoors
Whilst it is always wise to lock your cat inside at night, will you be keeping him outside or inside during the day? Or a combination of both? Some cat breeds love the freedom of outdoors, whilst others prefer being quietly inside. Choose a cat which suits your lifestyle.

How many cats?
If you are adopting kittens, sometimes it”’’s a good idea to take two together. This gives the kittens company and allows them to not have to adjust to a single life. On the other hand, it will of course cost you more in food and vet bills so make sure you weigh up both sides.

Buy or Adopt?
If you are after a pedigree (purebred) cat, then you””ll almost always have to buy from a breeder. Prices can vary from a couple of hundred for some breeds up to nearly $1000 for rare or exotic breeds. If you are not into cat showing and just want a friendly pet, or perhaps want to save a life, visit your local cat shelter and you can pick one up there for just the price of desexing and worming (usually around $100 or less).

Good luck with your cat search!
